Buckhead Location
Buckhead is an Atlanta heirloom. Robb Report magazine has consistently ranked Buckhead as one of the nation’s “10 Top Affluent Communities” for “some of the most beautiful mansions, best shopping and finest restaurants in the Southeastern United States”. Much of the area is lined with stately homes in forested settings. Buckhead is well known for its premium shopping, commonly referred to as the “Beverly Hills” of the South, Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza malls anchor the north end of the Peachtree Road shopping district. The Peachtree Road Corridor is becoming the focus of major high-rise mixed-use developments. There is a new retail district under construction at the south end of the Corridor, called the Streets of Buckhead, which will rival Madison Avenue and Rodeo Drive for shopping and dining. Once finished, the Peachtree Road Corridor will transform its section of Buckhead into an upscale urban environment. Buckhead has one-third of Atlanta’s high-rise buildings.
Buckhead History
It all started in 1838 when Henry Irby purchased 203 acres in what is currently the center of Buckhead. He built a tavern near where the Five Paces Inn is currently located. The area was originally called “Irbyville”, but took on its current name of “Buckhead” when he mounted the head of a large buck on post not far from the tavern. Buckhead was annexed into the city of Atlanta in 1952. Occasionally, people will mistakenly misspell it as “buck head”, but the correct spelling is the one-worded “Buckhead”.
Buckhead Homes
Buckhead has some of the most elegant homes, townhomes and condominiums in the Southeast. In the early 1900s Neel Reid dominated the Atlanta architecture scene. Owning a Neel Reid house was a mark of taste and distinction. Reid’s firm, Hentz and Reid, was a training ground for Philip Trammell Shutze, another leading Atlanta / Buckhead architect of the time.
