Overview of Atlanta

The city of Atlanta has three major commercial centers: Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead. Surrounding these major districts are smaller residential neighborhoods.

The Downtown district was the original center of economic activity for Atlanta. Over time, many of the business, banks and law firms who anchored the downtown area moved north to Midtown and Buckhead. Today, the major sources of economic activity for the Downtown are the government (State Capitol, Fulton County headquarters and Atlanta City Hall) and Georgia State University.

Midtown Atlanta has become a major commercial district with many high-rises, Piedmont Park and Ansley Park. Many of the largest law firms are located in Midtown.

Buckhead started out as a wealthy suburban community and has grown into Atlanta’s premium commercial, financial, shopping and entertainment center.

Atlanta’s east side is marked by the historic streetcar suburbs built in the late 19th century for upper middle class families, such as Inman Park, Grant Park, Virginia Highland and Candler Park.

The area west of Midtown has former warehouses and factories that have been transformed into condos, lofts, shopping, entertainment and trendy restaurants. It’s a hip area with some of the most talked-about restaurants in Atlanta.

The Buckhead community is located in the northern part of Atlanta. Midtown is located to the south of Buckhead, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody to the north of the community, Morningside to the east and Vinings to the west of Buckhead.
